Home Oxygen Therapy- Who Needs It?
Home Oxygen Therapy equipment delivers Oxygen (O2) which is a critical element for life. The essential air we breathe contains about 21% oxygen which is inhaled into the lungs and diffused through membranes into our blood. Sometimes certain conditions cause a shortage of oxygen in our body and we may need “extra” oxygen to keep active.
Breathing-related conditions such as Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD), causes the body to become short of oxygen. Oxygen therapy can also be used for other health issues such as treatment of Heart Failure and other cardio-respiratory conditions.
Starting Home Oxygen Therapy
During your visit with your physician or nurse practitioner, he or she has determined that oxygen therapy may be of benefit to you to help you feel better. This may be due to complaints of:
• feeling short of breath with little exercise,
• coughing or wheezing,
• feeling disoriented or dizzy,
• or any other related symptoms.
Your physician or nurse practitioner has taken one of two approaches regarding home oxygen therapy. They have either:
a) Sent us a request for an oxygen assessment. This means one of our clinicians will see you either at home when it is convenient for you, or in the hospital to test your oxygen levels by way of oximetry which is non-invasive. The clinician will simply place a probe on your finger which will determine your oxygen levels while resting, and may then walk with you to test your oxygen levels while exerting yourself.
If the clinician determines that your oxygen levels meet the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s medical criteria, they will let you know, and you will begin your home oxygen therapy right away.
b) Sent us a request for a Home Oxygen Set Up. This means your physician or nurse practitioner has pre-determined you require oxygen therapy, either by an Arterial Blood Gas, or an Independent Exercise Assessment. Our clinician will see you either at home at your convenience, or in the hospital to set you up with our oxygen equipment.
COPD is a disease that includes both Chronic Bronchitis and Emphysema; you can have one or the other but often a combination of these diseases exist.
In COPD the 2 main anatomical parts of the lung – the bronchial tubes and the alveoli – have become damaged.
When your body is short of oxygen it is hard to complete your normal activities and therefore you to significantly reduce your activity.
Home oxygen therapy provides you with a small flow of oxygen to your lungs to help return oxygen flows levels in your body to normal. With you breath restored you begin to regain energy and oxygen exchange, and this reduces your anxiety so your daily activities become easier to do and your confidence is restored.
Most people have a specific oxygen flow rate to use during the day and another flow rate to use during activities or at night. Our goal at Complete Healthcare Solutions is to provide you with the best oxygen therapy equipment solution to meet your lifestyle and clinical needs.
